Extending the boundaries of concrete performance requires new generation materials that can produce high performance concrete with superior workability, significantly increased strengths and dramatic improvement in durability and service life. With these objectives in mind, Micron MaterialsTM of South Africa has developed Super-Pozz®, a pozzolan that makes high performance concrete a practical option for a wide range of applications

Super-Pozz® is not just another pozzolan. With its unique chemistry, high reactivity and ultra-fine particle size, Super-Pozz® can produce high performance concrete similar to that produced with highly reactive materials such as silica fume. Unlike silica fume, which increases the water demand, Super-Pozz® actively reduces the water demand of the concrete thereby producing higher strengths. This property coupled with high pozzolanicity and efficient cementitious binder packing, produces a dense, impermeable concrete with improved durability.

The main benefits of using Super-Pozz® include increased durability, reduced water demand of the concrete mix, use of more cost effective admixtures dosages, improved workability and rheology, low water/binder ratio resulting in high strengths, reduced shrinkage, improved resistance to both chloride and sulphate attack, and good surface finish.

Concretes containing Super-Pozz® can be used in virtually any application where Portland Cement concretes are used. The typical addition rates range between 3 and 15 percent by weight of the cementitious content.

Super-Pozz® is particularly suited for applications such as high performance ready-mix and precast concrete, self compacting concrete (SCC), marine environment concrete, pumped concrete, wet sprayed concrete and proprietary pre-bagged formulation such as repair mortars, precision grouts and floor screeds.

In applications where durability is a key requirement, incorporating Super-Pozz® results in a dense paste matrix, which impedes the ingress of water or harmful chemicals that can attack both the concrete and reinforcing steel within the concrete. With the emphasis in the design of marine environment concretes shifting from high strength to low water demand and low heat generation mixes, the lower water demand of Super-Pozz® concretes is of prime importance particularly in combination with a low water cement ratio.

This enhanced durability is achieved through three basic mechanisms. Firstly, lower water demand concrete mixes have reduced drying shrinkage. This, coupled with reduced bleeding, ensures decreased porosity resulting in less permeable concrete.

Also the pozzolanic reaction of Super-Pozz® enhanced concrete refines the pore structure of the mortar fraction of the mix. This results in greater resistance to sulphate attack and chloride ion ingress. Thirdly, by reducing the water content with subsequent reduction in cement content, Super-Pozz® is effective in controlling the heat of hydration.
